miklcct :A very important concern about the opening of West Island Line is the amount of HKU / Sai Ying Pun passengers currently on buses 970/970X/973 lost to the MTR. There are mainly 5 kinds of such passengers:
1. For direct service
2. For changing to the East Rail Line at Mong Kok East Station / Austin Station
3. For changing to the West Rail Line at Austin Station
4. For changing to other WHC cross-harbour buses such as 960, 962 and 967
5. For changing to East Kowloon buses at Jordan Road such as 11, 14 and A22, which serve regions without the MTR
Do you think that a significant amount of these passengers will switch to the MTR once West Island Line opens?
I guess,
1. MTR may attract passengers from Sham Shui Po - Mong Kok during peak hours due to reliability and speed
2 & 3. Very likely especially students enjoying half fare
4. No unless they switch completely to MTR (for reasons like fare difference)
5. No because MTR is not particularly fast towards Jordan. But is this population large enough?
